Harry Coumnas, a Scientist on the International Space Station, Performed Scientific Experiments

Working aboard space shuttles, Harry Coumnas is the mission specialist. In addition, he prepares other mission professionals to take on the technical astronaut duties and pilots to operate shuttles. He feels that being an astronaut is something that only millions of people can truly dream of. He takes care of the myriad chores that come with living in space.

As a mission specialist, he assists in the assembly and testing of equipment and offers guidance and support to other shuttle crews. In order to perform extravehicular activities, he uses the robot arm on the shuttle and exits the cabin wearing protective space suits. Harry specializes in mission planning, which includes overseeing crew activities and managing the supply of food and beverages. He is also skilled in building space stations and conducting spacewalks. Utilizing simulations that replicate the spaceflight environment, he has put in hundreds of hours of training.

Former astronaut Harry Coumnas carried out scientific research, including studies on the human body and space travel, while stationed as a scientist on the International Space Station.

As the officer responsible for planetary protection, he helped with the building of sterile spacecraft, the creation of strategies to safeguard Earth from returned extraterrestrial samples, and the creation and implementation of space policy for planetary protection.
